Song Of The Month: Petit Papa Noël

This month we have chosen the French song “Petit Papa Noël”, covered by Tino Rossi. This traditional French Christmas song has a unique history. The song was first written in 1944 by Xavier Lermercier for an operetta of Emile Audiffred at Odéon. The lyrics were those of a young boy’s prayer to Father Christmas asking for his father, who was a prisoner of war in Germany, to come home. Raymond Vincy rewrote the lyrics removing all allusion to the war at the request of Emile Aufiffred. So what once was a war song has now become an incredibly popular secular hymn sung by all French children.

The song has very clear rhymes which allows those learning French to get to know the different spellings possible for the same sound!

  • Blanc/enfants
  • Noël/ciel
  • Froid/moi

These words are all pronounced in the same way, but are written differently.

It is also interesting to note the use of childish vocabulary: ‘dodo‘, ‘joujoux‘. This reminds us of an important French grammar rule: words that end in «-ou» end in «-ous» in their plural form, except the following: bijou, caillou, chou, genou, hibou, joujou, pou that end in «-oux» in the plural!
