ESL game: picture dictation
Embrace the warmth and vibrancy of summer with an engaging ESL activity designed to ignite creativity and expand vocabulary through interactive picture dictation. As the sun-soaked days stretch ahead, keeping children occupied with fun and educational activities becomes more important than ever. This activity not only enhances language skills but also serves as a creative outlet during the leisurely, warm months of summer.

Materials Needed:
- Paper and pens/pencils for each student
- A variety of pictures related to a chosen theme (e.g., animals, professions, household items)
- Optional: Flashcards with images and words for visual aid
Preparation:
- Choose a Theme: Select a theme for the pictures. Consider themes that are relevant to the children’s interests or recent topics you have spoken about.
- Prepare Pictures: Collect or print out pictures related to the chosen theme. Ensure there are enough pictures for every child.
- Optional Visual Aid: Create flashcards with drawings and words corresponding to each picture to aid in vocabulary recall.
Part 1: Introduction
- Warm-Up Discussion:
- Begin with a brief discussion about the chosen theme. For example, if the theme is animals, ask the children about their favourite animals or where they have seen them before.
- Show the pictures or flashcards to introduce or review vocabulary related to the theme. Encourage them to describe the animals in more detail, such as their habitat, size, or characteristics.
- Explain the Activity:
- Explain that the children will participate in a picture dictation activity. They will work individually or in pairs to describe a picture from the theme to their partner(s), who will then draw based on the description.
- Demonstrate the activity by describing a picture and having the children guess or draw what they hear.
Part 2: Performing the Activity
- Pairing and Describing:
- Have children work in pairs (or with you). One person describes a picture from the theme while the other(s) listen and draw based on the description.
- Encourage the speaker to use descriptive language and provide details about the picture to challenge their partner(s) in drawing accurately.
- Switch Roles:
- After a set time, switch roles so that each child has the opportunity to describe and draw.
- This allows all children to practise both speaking and listening skills effectively.
- Switch it up:
- Switching up the game to include drawing first and then describing adds an exciting twist to the learning experience. In this engaging variation, the children unleash their creativity by first crafting colourful artworks based on a given theme or prompt, such as illustrating their favourite summer pastime or envisioning an outdoor adventure. Once their drawings are complete, they step into the role of storytellers, employing descriptive language to vividly explain their illustrations to the instructor. This activity not only hones their artistic skills but also strengthens vocabulary acquisition and communication abilities. It encourages children to think critically, articulate their ideas clearly, and actively participate in both visual and verbal forms of expression, fostering a dynamic learning environment.
Part 3: Sharing and Feedback
- Review and Discuss:
- Once everyone has had a chance to describe and draw, have the children compare their drawings with the original pictures.
- Discuss any challenges encountered during the activity and how descriptive language helped or could have been improved.
- Extension Activities:
- Vocabulary Expansion: Have the children write down new vocabulary words they encountered during the activity and discuss their meanings.
- Creative Writing: Ask them to write a short story or description using the vocabulary words they learned from the pictures. Then have them read it out to you – make it into an exciting performance!
This picture dictation activity not only enhances vocabulary retention and pronunciation but also fosters creativity and teamwork among children. It provides a dynamic and enjoyable way to reinforce language skills as the school year comes to a close.
