“Mystery Object!” – A Fun Guessing Game
Looking for an engaging and educational way to teach English to a child “Mystery Object!” is a simple but effective guessing game that helps develop vocabulary, descriptive language, and critical thinking. It’s fun, interactive, and requires nothing more than household items!
Guess The Mystery Object
How to Play:
Players: 1 or more children + 1 adult
Duration: 10-15 minutes
Skills Practiced: Describing objects (colour, size, shape, texture), asking & answering questions, building sentences.
Setup:
- The adult secretly picks an object from the room (e.g., a book, spoon, toy, or fruit).
- The child must guess the object by asking Yes/No questions in English.
Basic Version (For Beginners):
- The adult gives three clues about the mystery object. Example:
- “It is round.”
- “It is red.”
- “You can eat it.”
- The child must guess the object (e.g., “Is it an apple?”).
- If they are correct, they win! If not, they can ask one more question before guessing again.

Intermediate Version (Encouraging Questions):
- Instead of clues, the child must ask Yes/No questions to figure out the object. Example:
- “Is it big?”
- “Is it soft?”
- “Can you eat it?”
- The adult answers with “Yes, it is” or “No, it isn’t” until the child guesses the object correctly.
Advanced Version (Using Full Sentences):
- The adult and child take turns choosing the mystery object.
- The child must describe the object in full sentences:
- “It is small and made of plastic.”
- “You use it to write.”
- “It has many colors.”
- The adult guesses the object!
This game:
Encourages conversation – The child practices asking & answering questions.
Expands vocabulary – Helps with adjectives, objects, and everyday words.
Works anywhere – At home, in a classroom, or even while traveling.
Try this next time you are looking after the children, it makes the learning process more enjoyable for all!
