Charlie’s experience as a Babylangues Instructor in Lyon

Moving from the USA to Lyon for my study abroad program was both exciting and nerve-wracking. I didn’t know anyone when I arrived, and settling into a new country, culture, and language felt like a huge challenge. But one of the best decisions I made was joining Babylangues and becoming an English instructor. Through them, I was introduced to a wonderful family, and every Wednesday, I had the privilege of looking after their two amazing children—a lively four-year-old girl and her fun-loving six-year-old brother.

From the very start, the children welcomed me with endless enthusiasm. Instead of traditional lessons, they learned English through play—building Lego towers while practicing colours, making up silly stories with their toys, and running around in the park while shouting out action words like “jump,” “run,” and “spin!” One of my favorite moments was when they started teaching their parents English words they had picked up from our games—it was proof that our fun sessions were really working!

A Rewarding Experience

But what made this experience truly special was the kindness and generosity of their family. They didn’t just treat me as a babysitter; they welcomed me into their home and into their lives. They introduced me to French traditions, shared incredible recipes, and even gave me tips on the best places to explore in Lyon. Having that support made a huge difference in my experience, it helped me feel less like a foreigner and more like part of the community.

Through Babylangues, I also got the chance to meet other students and expats who, like me, were navigating life in a new country. Whether it was sharing stories over coffee, discovering Lyon’s vibrant nightlife, or exchanging tips on French bureaucracy, I found a network of like-minded people who made my time here even more unforgettable.

Feeling At Home in France

Looking back, I realize that this experience was about so much more than just teaching English; it was about cultural exchange, building relationships, and truly feeling at home in France. While the children learnt so much, I was also rewarded with being able to watch them pick up the language, and over the year I was there I couldn’t believe the progress that we had made! I can’t believe my time in Lyon has already come to an end, and I really hope I am able to enjoy an experience like this again in the future.
