Baby Blague #14

Quel est le sport le plus fruité ? (What is the fruitiest sport?)

La boxe, parce que tu te prends des pêches dans la poire et tu tombes dans les pommes. (Boxing, because you take punches in the head and faint.)

Right, so this joke really doesn’t translate into English because it uses idiomatic meanings of words that are specific to French. For example, “une pêche” means a peach, but can also mean a “punch”. “la poire” is another way of referring to a “head”. The origin of this alternate meaning may have come about in the 1830s, when a caricaturist drew the head of King Louis-Phillipe as a pear! Similarly “tomber dans les pommes” is an idiomatic expression, meaning “to faint”. But since we’ve got three different fruit allusions in this joke, it seems as if boxing really is the fruitiest sport! At least in French, anyway.

Les Baby Blagues

Baby blagues are a collection of jokes chosen by Babylangues. The jokes are inspired by Les Blagues Carambar – jokes traditionally found in the wrappers of French Carambar sweets. These have now become particularly famous as bad, childish jokes. However they still make the French laugh!

This is an example of a Baby blague: Ce matin, j’ai voulu faire une blague sur le Super U, mais elle n’a pas Supermarché !

Not to worry: we have come up with our own ones that are easy to understand, so that they will not be all that bad! We have decided to explore French jokes a little more and found that they are often orientated around a product of language. So, each joke will not only brighten your day but also improve your understanding of the French language.
